I reach out to you.
The northern lights were always an anticipated time. Many people were setting up their tents for the night as the sun was beginning to set over Alaska. People huddled together around campfires under blankets. A brown wolf stood on the hill looking down on the many tents. Her pretty eyes watched them intently.
Nikki could barely remember what it was like to be a full human. As a shifter, it was hard to seem normal at times. But this afternoon at Jinto's she said she would be here for the Northern Lights tonight. After sundown, she might switch back into her human form for only a few hours, making her presence known. Then she would slither back to the woods, changing into a wolf.
The smell of grilled hamburgers filled her enhanced nostrils. Her wolfy mouth watered. She could always just hunt, but hunting always freaked her out a little. She made her way down the hill, the opposite direction of the humans. The timber forest was only a short way down from the field and Nikki entered it, letting a mournful howl. As she did, the wind picked up. Kinou?

A couple of miles out, Marshall Hogan stopped his squad car and stepped out. He checked his sidearm and and his belt making sure he had everything he needed incase something happened. Ever since that night he was never too prepared. He closed the door and locked it. Did he really see a shadow before the light faded? He could have sworn it...He made his way through the woods as quietly as he could trying to avoid every twig and leaf. If something was here...He wanted to see it first. He switched on his flashlight and drew his sidearm. Minutes later he could almost make out a silhouette in the darkness, He crept towards is wanting to get as close as possible before shining his light on it. He made a mistake...He accidentally stepped on a large branch making loud crack. He quickly readied his sidearm and raised his light up and pointed it in the direction the silhouette last was....

Nikki had been sniffing around the ground quite intently, not even noticing Marshall, the police officer, making his way toward her. When the loud crack echoed in her ears, she sucked in a huge breath of surprise. It was shadowy enough to shift. If she was still in her wolf state, he could shoot her. A lot of humans were known for shooting wolves....
But what would she do about clothes? She remembered how she left them back a few miles into the woods. Oh shit... Thoughts ran through her mind. Nikki had been shot at several times in the past, surely a police officer wouldn't shoot a wolf for no reason. Turning to run, Nikki accidentally dove into a patch of thorns. She let out a yelp in unexpected pain and the thorns wove into her fur.

Marshall pointed the flashlight and gun at the thorn patch. There was no movement...He crept closer and closer. "That was a distinctive sound....iv heard that before..." he said to himself. It could only be a wolf...
He was just a few feet from the bush when..."7-71..." His radio keyed in. He sighed keeping an eye on the bush. "7-71...over..." "7-71 we have a report of a small gathering at the Hills overlook. Can you check into that please." The voice said in more of a telling tone rather than asking. "Copy that dispatch...Its probably the usual gathering for the lights but I'll check into it..." "Roger that 7-71...in route."
Marshall pointed his gun at the bush and fired a round...there was movement elsewhere in the woods. He holstered his Sidearm and turned around looking at the bush...he walked off to his squad car and disappeared into the dark as the flashlight faded from view.

The only thing that Nikki could do was either wait for the cop to shoot or wait for him to turn and leave. When he shot the gun, she wasn't too surprised, until the pain in her right hind leg began. If she kept quiet maybe he wouldn't shoot again. Nikki kept from howling or yelping and tried to convince herself that Marshall just tried to shoot at her to scare her off.
She thought for a moment how strange it would be to see Marshall around the town. He wouldn't even have known that he shot her. He probably wouldn't give another thought to it. Tempted to shift back into her human form, she stopped herself. It would be easier for her to travel at least a mile back to clothes, but could she risk it? Of course she wouldn't just let someone find her naked out in the woods with a gunshot wound.
Looking at the faint glow coming from the campsites Nikki thought, The campers! One of them where bound to at least have a very large T-shirt. But a wolf just bounding into a cluster of human's wasn't very smart, it was a deathwish. Chances were, Marshall was back at gathering and would he shoot her again? Nikki thought that in her human form she would have to explain more of how she got shot and who shot her. There would be a lot more dealing with the law.
In mid thought another stinging pain came from her leg and she yelped without giving a though about it. Forgetting all about the tangled mess of fur and thorns, Nikki yanked free and hobbled half way up the hill. Would a few mournful cries bring a human to help?
